“In general, costumes are the first thing in life that let other people know who we are. They indicate who the person is without saying anything.”

– Molly Parker

About this Fangirl

I have always loved being able to create and/or put on a costume and become a different person or character. Not to hide, but to express myself in new and different ways that is the antithesis of my everyday wear and tear.

I was taught the basics of sewing from my Grandmother -an incredible seamstress who had made all of my Dance costumes. She wanted to be sure I could hem all my own clothes to save money because I'm so short.

Learning how to construct and create costumes came from my HighSchool Theatre days. Our teacher filled me with a passion to always think outside the box and use what you had and creating costumes anyway we could (I remember stapling a hem on a gold dress once) because we had a tight budget and it didn't necessarily have to look up close just from afar. Unfortunately I have no surviving pictures.

High School behind me and no outlet for my creativity, I started going to the Renaissance Festivals. You can tell a progression in costumes... Using what I had or could find at thrift stores, making my own, then a buying two 'main pieces' (my hat and corset) while the rest are still pieces I cobbled together.

Once in College, my love and passion for Theatre shifted to Film and Television. The idea of creating a look and design that added to the plot, character development, to relay and unspoken relationship, status or idea was and still is intoxicating!

I dabbled in make up and prop creation while I earned my degree...

Now that I've graduated and am working mostly in Film/TV production I do still occasionally run away to the costume department :) My never ending love for costumes shines through in my recent passion for dressing up for Geek/SciFi/Cult Conventions!

Halloween has never been about the candy and mayhem for me...It's always been just one more legitimate reason to create a new costume... well, and maybe a little mayhem too!
